“Ann Droid” (season 1) — opens in 2029, when recently widowed Sue is determined to remain independent even as her only son Michael prepares to move out once again and repair his troubled marriage. Worried about leaving her alone, he buys Linda, a second-hand AnnDroid Z58/100 Basic Eldercare Robot designed to monitor health, provide companionship, and reduce pressure on human carers. Sue immediately hates her new housemate: Linda is rigid, painfully literal, socially inept, and so overattentive that simple errands become public disasters. Yet Sue soon discovers that the robot’s blunt efficiency can also settle old scores, complete jobs Michael has avoided, and push her beyond the routines that have kept grief safely contained. Their reluctant partnership carries them through chaos at Eileen’s charity shop, an awkward family visit, a trip to the seaside to scatter ashes, a dangerous funfair ride, and a camping expedition beneath a meteor shower. Around them, Michael’s unstable home life, Renee’s demands, and the unpredictable company of Eileen and Tom expose how lonely Sue has become since David’s death. Linda may understand human emotion only through research and awkward observation, but her presence gradually encourages Sue to re-enter the world, while Sue teaches the outdated machine that care cannot be reduced to measurements and instructions. “Ann Droid” (season 1) becomes a warm, eccentric comedy about aging, grief, friendship, and the possibility that an imperfect artificial companion may reveal which parts of human connection can never truly be replaced.
