He managed to escape from the punishing hand of the law, because after his wrongdoing the punishment was followed by an unfair one. Jean Valjean tried to help the big sister, who suffered from ailments. She needed food, so the main character was forced to go to theft. Now the man huddles in a small settlement, where he takes care of the daughter of the deceased acquaintance. The police are looking for Valjean. He has a police inspector, Gillber, on his tail, who considers this matter to be one of the most important in his career.

The movie retells the twists and turns of the French writer Sidonie-Gabriel Colette, who, due to her youth and inexperience, married the venerable Parisian critic and writer Henri-Gautier Villars, who turned out to be a complete nonentity – both in human and professional terms. Seeing the disappointment of his wife and recognizing her longing for her native rural Burgundy, the enterprising scribbler turns this in his favor.
