Line of Duty Season 5 follows AC-12, led by Superintendent Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar), DI Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure), and DS Steve Arnott (Martin Compston), as they investigate an Organised Crime Group (OCG) with links to missing undercover officer DS John Corbett (Stephen Graham). The season begins with a dramatic hijacking of a police convoy transporting seized drugs, resulting in the deaths of three officers. AC-12 suspects police collusion and begins to uncover a web of corruption within the force. As the investigation progresses, it is revealed that DS John Corbett has infiltrated the OCG, but his methods and true intentions are questionable. Corbett’s actions become increasingly erratic, leading to tension and mistrust within the team. The season also introduces Lisa McQueen (Rochenda Sandall), a key member of the OCG, and DCS Patricia Carmichael (Anna Maxwell Martin), who plays a significant role in the latter part of the investigation. The storyline delves into themes of loyalty, betrayal, and the blurred lines between right and wrong. This series is devoted mainly to the future Commissioner Gordon, one of Batman’s main allies among the common people. We see how Gordon, while still new to the police, is trying to join the team, but very quickly realizes that Gotham received the title of “the most criminal city in the world” not without the help of his detective colleagues who cover criminals, imprison innocent people and try hush up the case only for the sake of increasing national calm. We are told the story of his formation – why he decided to go against the system (from the very first frames it is clear that he does not look like other detectives) and how this affected his character.
