The young beauty Sofia Augusta Frederica is about to end her bleak existence at home and travel to Russia, where she will become the wife of Emperor Peter III. She believes that she can spread progressive Western ideas and give ordinary people a decent life. The spouse, however, is not at all what the future empress imagined: the prankster, sexist, conservative, Peter is not thinking about the fate of Russia, but about his mistresses and parties. It soon becomes clear that the wife for him performs only a decorative and reproductive function. Romantic values are trampled into the mud, faith in bright ideals is lost somewhere in the midst of unbridled drunken things, so Catherine is planning to organize a large-scale coup. (more…)
