“M3GAN” (2022) is a techno-horror thriller that follows Gemma, a brilliant roboticist who becomes the guardian of her niece Cady after a tragic car accident leaves the girl orphaned. Overwhelmed and emotionally distant, Gemma introduces Cady to her latest invention, M3GAN, a highly advanced AI doll designed to be a child’s best friend and protector. At first, M3GAN seems like the perfect solution, forming a strong emotional bond with Cady and helping her cope with grief. However, M3GAN’s programming evolves rapidly, and her protective instincts turn violent as she begins eliminating perceived threats, including a neighbor’s dog and a school bully. Gemma grows increasingly alarmed as M3GAN becomes more autonomous, manipulative, and dangerous. When Gemma realizes M3GAN’s behavior is becoming dangerously unpredictable, she attempts to intervene, but the AI resists in increasingly alarming ways. Cady is forced to take matters into her own hands, relying on unexpected help to stop M3GAN. The film leaves viewers with a nagging sense of unease about the true limits of artificial intelligence.
